Plantlife and other leading environment groups warn Government over failing nature record

October 14 2011

"While the evidence stacks up that wildlife and the countryside matters both to society and the economy this feels largely absent from the Government’s decision-making process."

Nicola Hutchinson, Plantlife’s Head of Conservation Programmes in England and chair of WCL’s Biodiversity Group.

Wildlife and Countryside Link has today published Nature Check: an analysis of the Government’s natural environment commitment.

Compiled by 29 of the UK’s leading environmental groups - including Plantlife - the report is an assessment of the Coalition Government’s statement that it would be the “greenest government ever”

We have reviewed progress against 16 Government commitments on the natural environment and agree that the results are not looking good.

Plantlife’s Head of Conservation Programmes in England, Nicola Hutchinson, is also the chair of WCL’s Biodiversity Group. She said: “So far this year we have had a White Paper on the natural environment, a new strategy for biodiversity in England, and the publication of extensive research proving the economic value of nature."

"Yet while the evidence stacks up that wildlife and the countryside matters both to society and the economy this feels largely absent from the Government’s decision-making process.”
