International networks

Plantlife International is working together with the following international networks:


Planta Europa is the network of plant conservation organisations in Europe. It consists of governmental and non-governmental organisations working together to conserve wild plants and fungi in the habitats in which they grow. Plantlife International hosts the secretariat of Planta Europa and, as a member of the network, drives many of its activities.

IUCN – the World Conservation Union

Important Plant Area identification and protection is a global priority of the IUCN Species Survival Commission's Global Plant Conservation Programme and objective 5.2 in the IUCN European Programme 2005 - 2008. It is also an objective of IUCN Parks for Life, the European programme of IUCN World Commission of Protected Areas - Priority Project 6 (specifically article 4.3.5 on the identification and conservation of higher plant sites and article 4.3.6 on the identification of important sites for lower plants).

Global Partnership for Plant Conservation
Plantlife International is a member of the Global Partnership for Plant Conservation. The Partnership is an initiative supported by a wide range of international and national agencies and organisations active in plant conservation. It provides an important framework to bring together a great diversity of organisations and initiatives to meet common objectives in plant conservation worldwide.

European Habitats Forum
Plantlife International is representing the Planta Europa network at the European Habitats Forum, a network of international non-governmental organizations involved in the conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable use of species, habitats and landscapes throughout Europe. The Forum promotes nature conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources in Europe and fosters communication between European nature conservation NGOs in order to enhance the effectiveness of their programs.

The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network
Plantlife International has strong links to and frequent exchange with the New Zealand Plant Conservation Network, which has been established as a contribution towards implementing the New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy and the Global Plant Conservation Strategy.

Important Plant Areas

The Important Plant Area programme is also closely linked in aims and methodology to the highly successful Important Bird Areas programme led by BirdLife International and Key Biodiversity Areas (link to key_biodiversity_areas in data zone) which combine approaches from across taxa. Key biodiversity areas are jointly promoted by BirdLife International, Plantlife International and Conservation International's ‘Center for Applied Biodiversity Science’ . In Europe Prime Butterfly Areas, Important Dragonfly Areas and Important Herpetological Areas are also being identified.
