Romania covers almost 238,000 km² in south eastern Europe and has five biogeographic zones, the Continental, Pannonian, Alpine, Steppic and Black Sea.
The diversity of biogeographic zones matches the diversity of plant species and habitats from the Carpathian Mountains in the north, to the steppic grasslands and wetland areas of the Danube Delta in the south. Romania has two Centres of Plant Diversity, the Carpathians and the Danube Delta. Protected areas with botanical importance cover about 5% of the Romanian territory. Romania is set to accede to the EU in 2007 and is also a member of the Council of Europe.
