Other IPA activities worldwide
In southern Africa the South African Botanical Diversity Network is developing an IPA project. The IPA criteria for southern Africa were refined at a recent regional workshop and are currently undergoing consultation.
Representatives from Angola, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe were represented. For more information contact Tamara Smith (Smitht@nbi.ac.za) at the National Botanical Institute in Pretoria
The first national IPA workshop for north Africa, took place in Morocco and workshops have also taken place in Namibia and Mozambique.

A regional IPA workshop for south-east Asia was held in Manilla, in early 2004, with representatives from nine countries in this region – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand. In 2003, Plantlife International and the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation organised an IPA workshop for the Mediterranean region in Malaga. This was in partnership with the IUCN Species Survival Commission and the Planta Europa network.
The workshop involved 35 plant specialists from the Mediterranean who developed proposals for the identification of Important Plant Areas (IPAs) in the region, and provided their insight for movingforward the IPA programme in this region. Following this, national IPA workshops took place in Lebanon and Morocco.
