Arabia
In 2006 the IUCN Arabian Plant Specialist Group developed a draft list of IPA for Arabia (covering Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Yemen) for more information on this work contact Tony Miller at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
Also in 2006 Plantlife joined forces with the Ethnobotanical Society of Nepal to organise a regional workshop on the conservation of Important Plant Areas. The workshop brought together the IPA concept and the ongoing work of Plantlife’s sustainable livelihoods programme. Representatives from five Himalayan countries attended and a full report will be published in 2007. 54 Important Plant Area complexes (similar in size to very large protected areas) were identified across the Himalaya, with numerous smaller ‘micro IPA’ within them. These smaller sites are suitable for community-based approaches to conservation. Community based initiatives at micro IPA can be used to demonstrate methods appropriate for use at small scale throughout larger IPA complexes.

In 2003, Plantlife International and the IUCN Centre for Mediterranean Cooperation organised an IPA workshop for the Mediterranean region in Malaga. This was in partnership with the IUCN Species Survival Commission and the Planta Europa network.
The workshop involved 35 plant specialists from the Mediterranean who developed proposals for the identification of Important Plant Areas (IPAs) in the region, and provided their insight for movingforward the IPA programme in this region. Following this, national IPA workshops took place in Lebanon and Morocco.

A team in Morocco have identified 57 preliminary IPA: 15 priority I sites, 27 priority II and 15 priority III. Detailed reports can be found here . Morocco is also a one of the countries within the multi-country GEF project focusing on red listing and plant conservation on IPA
The New Zealand Plant Conservation Network is still calling for nominations of Important Plant Areas using the on-line nomination form on the Network’s website. The IPA criteria have been adapted for use in New Zealand and nominated sites will be examined by an expert panel every few months and if supported will become part of the Network’s IPA database. Gradually the Network intends to build up a database of the most important areas in New Zealand for plants which will aid it’s conservation programme. The main contact point for this New Zealand Plant Conservation Network is John Sawyer. See the website for more details www.nzpcn.org.nz
Botanists and conservationists in the Altai region of Russia, are currently engaged in a programme to identify and conserve IPA in that region. The project is coordinated by IUCN CIS office and for more information contact Galina Pronkina pronkins@mtu-net.ru
A regional IPA workshop was held in southern Africa in 2004 (a final project of hosted by SABONET – the Southern African Botanical Diversity Network a programme which has officially finished). The results of this workshop have now been published [scanned picture of report]
The report can be obtained from Yolande Steenkamp at the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) Ysteenkamp@sanbi.org.
Namibia and Mozambique
As a result of the regional workshop national workshop were held in Nambia and 30 preliminary IPA were identified. Key contact is Sonja Loots of the National Botanical Research Institute (sonjal@nbri.org.na)
In Mozambique, a similar workshop identified 28 IPA across all regions. Key contacts Samira Izidine and Ana Cândido at INIA Botânica (sizidine@yahoo.com and acandidio2000@yahoo.com.br)

A regional IPA workshop for south-east Asia was held in Manilla, in early 2004, with representatives from nine countries in this region – Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Thailand. For more information contact Dr Domingo Madulid (dmadulid@info.com.ph) of the Philippine National Museum.

Multi-country ‘GEF Plants project’ to establish plant red lists and IPA conservation (Cameroon, Costa Rica, Madagascar, Morocco, Philippines, Sri Lanka)
This project aims to develop preliminary plant red lists and IPA inventories for all the countries listed (publications and online) and to carry out pilot IPA conservation projects on one or two sites to develop models and protocols for plant conservation in these and the surrounding countries. The project has a strong element of capacity building within it.
The full title of the publication is: Implementing the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation: identification of threatened plant species and protection of important plant areas in six priority countries’ IMIS: GFL-2328-2713-4892 PMs:GF/6030-05-03
The PDF-B phase of the project began is 2006 and is being lead by Botanic Gardens Conservation International link to their site www.bgci.org and IUCN Species Programme http://www.iucn.org/themes/ssc/
