A note by Paul Ssegawa, 1 December 2006
Paul Ssegawa, a member of UGANEB involved with this project, reports that he has recently visited Tooro Botanical Gardens in Fort Portal (see other project on medicinal plants supported in Uganda by Plantlife) and the Namanve Tree Seed Centre in Kampala. This proved extremely useful for getting a practical feel about nursery management and the establishment of medicinal plant gardens. There proved a lot to learn in both places through asking questions and looking at the infrastructure. Very impressed by their experiences, the villagers have not returned to Sango Bay determined to put some of the ideas they saw into practice before the Xmas break. They have returned armed with detailed information on seed collection, seed sowing, timing in relation to the seasons, pre-sowing treatments, establishment of nursery beds and transfer of planting material to planting sites.
