Once much more
common than today, Juniper is in decline. Many Junipers are
more than 100 years old and produce little viable seed, which
in addition to problems caused by overgrazing can mean that
few young plants survive.
The plant is threatened
by:
- Overgrazing that prevents the establishment of young
bushes
- Undergrazing that can lead to Juniper being shaded out
by other plants
- Clearance of bushes
- Excessive burning that can destroy bushes
In addition, juniper is no longer valued as it once was as
firewood, for building stock barricades or for its medicinal
qualities. Today, Juniper is mostly used as a flavouring in
food and drink, particularly gin.
