West Midlands
The Industrial Revolution was sparked in the West Midlands when Abraham Darby first smelted iron using coke in what is now Ironbridge gorge. These days the dark Satanic mills have largely disappeared and the region is equally admired for its countryside. Shropshire’s ‘blue remembered hills’ support a range of heath species and the county also supports important wetland habitats, such as Brown Moss in the north. The river Wye also winds its way through the region, its breathtaking landscape is a haven for lichens and bryophytes as well as other wildlife.
