Bracken Pteridium aquilinum

Status Non-native, invasive
Best Time to See
Habitat Woodland

The uncoiling new growth of bracken is one of our treasures in the wild, the stalk unfurls in a coil to reveal a swirl of green leaves.

The plant spreads underground by sending out rhizomes which themselves uncoil. Bracken is a deciduous plant remaining green until the colder months when the leaves die back to show the brown stalks.

Can be found almost everywhere in the UK.

Grows on heaths, moors, in woods and on other sometimes neglected spaces.

Bracken can be an invasive plant not always desired by land managers, which has given rise to the activity 'bracken bashing'.
