Common hair-cap moss Polytrichum commune

Also known as "great Goldilocks" on account of its hirsute appearance.

It is often dark green in colour but turns brown as it ages. One of the giants of the moss world, its stems have been known to reach 70cm (28 inches) in length although more commonly it restrains itself to a more sedate 5-10cm (2 to 4 inches).

Where to see

Like many mosses, common hair-cap moss loves a damp, humid environment, which makes many areas of the UK an ideal home. It can commonly be found in boggy environments and along river banks.

Did you know?

Its hairy reputation doesn't come from appearance alone: Roman ladies allegedly used this moss to bulk out their hair-dos!
