One of the largest funguses in the world, the giant puffball can contain over seven trillion spores in a single fruitbody alone and has been known to grow to the size of a small sheep!

It is popular with foragers, but only when young, when its flesh is white throughout (as it ages the flesh turns yellow-brown and inedible). Its spores have an olive-brown hue.

Occasionally found throughout the UK.

Where to see

Parks and other grassland environments. Giant puffballs love nutrient-rich soil and can often be found next to stinging nettles.
