Tall reed Phragmites communis

Also known as 'Norfolk reed'.

A tall grass that grows at the edges of waterbodies, this plant can reach heights of up to three and a half metres.

Its flowerhead is loose and purplish with white silky hairs that grow around it.


Mud, shallow water by lakes, rivers, fens, bogs, saltmarshes.

Best time to see

Flowers August-October.
