Nutrient-poor waters with Stonewort algae
This low-lying area, on the borders of Monaghan and Fermanagh around the Finn River, is notable for its concentration of small calcareous ‘marl’ lakes.
Levels of nutrients in marl lakes are low, providing a habitat to which stoneworts are particularly suited, which has resulted in this area being of particular value for its stonewort population.
