Strangford Lough IPA

Location: South east of Belfast. The A22 from Belfast lies to its west and the A20 skirts its eastern shore.

Strangford Lough IPA has been recognised as one of 165 Important Plant Areas in the UK.

The key features of this IPA are:

  • The species richness of marine algae in Littoral rock and other hard substrata and Sublittoral rock and other hard substrata
  • Strangford Lough is a large (150km²) shallow sea lough situated on the east coast of County Down, Northern Ireland.

    About a third of the lough is intertidal. The southern half of Strangford Lough has high algal diversity and maerl beds.

    This IPA has been identified for stonewort and habitat interest.
