Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum)

Image:Summer Snowflake (Leucojum aestivum)

“White flowers hanging in severe purity from long stems”, wrote poet and writer Geoffrey Grigson. As for the habitat, “Imagine a black swamp, alders or willows overhead, a swamp which quivers and soggs and stinks”. In Berkshire they are called Loddon lilies, and grow beside the River Loddon.

Habitat: riverside marshes and wet open woods. Flowers: April-May.
