Essex

Common Poppy (Papaver rhoeas)

Common Poppy (Papaver rhoeas)

Essex gets the Poppy! Poppies still adorn cornfields in the county, though they are just as common on disturbed ground, especially on the chalk. Perhaps poppy-red is an appropriate colour for a county that has the Saxon seax or meat-cleaver as its symbol!

Habitat: field margins and disturbed ground. Flowers: June-September.
