Red rose (Rosa sp.)

Lancashire has been the Red Rose county since the Middle Ages, when the House of Lancaster adopted it as a heraldic badge. The true Red Rose is said to be Rosa gallica, a garden plant originating from the Mediterranean.

Habitat: hedges and wood borders. Flowers: June-July.
