Grow Wild to Know Wild
with BBC Gardeners' World Live and Plantlife
In 2006, Plantlife joined forces with BBC Gardeners' World Live in a campaign to highlight the threats facing Britain's wild plants and to showcase the very best native flowers that can be grown in the garden.
Astonishingly, the UK has approximately 15 million gardens, making up 500,000 hectares of man-made green habitat. This compares with only 225,000 hectares of nature reserve. The Grow Wild campaign aims to encourage gardeners to dedicate 10% of their gardens to native plants and highlights some wonderful plants to include in your garden for the spring and summer, as well as advice on where, when and how to plant them.
The campaign was brought to life in June 2006 at the BBC Gardeners' World Live show at the NEC Birmingham, with an inspirational show garden by Plantlife. Visitors were able to see firsthand how beautiful native flowers are and how versatile they can be.
Adam Pasco, editor of Gardeners' World magazine, comments: 'This campaign is set to inspire gardeners throughout the country to grow more wild flowers.
'People often shy away from using them simply because they don't understand enough about how they grow, and don't find them offered for sale in garden centres.
'The BBC Gardeners' World Live and Plantlife Grow Wild campaign should start to change this, and help gardeners put native plants back into British gardens."
