This moss can only be identified when fruiting bodies are present and usually grows in moist hollows in sand dunes. Survey work is currently underway to confirm its current status in Britain and also to identify any threats to sites.
The main threats are likely to be falling water tables and nutrient enrichment in dune systems, dunes becoming overgrown and recreational development, including nutrient enrichment from dog fouling.
It is classified as Vulnerable in Britain.
