A small plant with a spike of small pale-greenish, nodding, bell-like flowers on the stem, and light-green leaves at the base.

It grows in woods, under heathers and on rock ledges in mountain areas, mainly in the Scottish Highlands but also at a few sites in the Lake District, Wales and Ireland.

It is principally threatened by overgrazing and fires on the high heather moors.
