Chara baltica Baltic stonewort
A simple water plant with whorls of narrow leaf-like branches along its length. It is often up to 90 cm long, and is scattered with small bristles. It grows on sand in pools and ponds near the sea, favouring slightly salty water.
It is found at four sites in the Norfolk Broads as well as at four other British coastal sites. It is mainly threatened by nutrient enrichment caused by fertilisers, but can also be smothered by stronger water plants, particularly invasive aliens.
Classified as Endangered.
