Nitella gracilis Slender Stonewort

A simple water plant with whorls of narrow leaf-like branches along its length. It is a light yellowish-green and is a delicate plant usually less than 20 cm long.

It grows in shallow pools or ditches where the water is slightly acidic, often at some altitude. It is only found at five sites, three in Wales and two in Scotland. Its main threats would appear to be use of the water for fish farming or changes in the surrounding forests.

Classified as Endangered.
