Also known as the 'Arctic starflower', chickweed wintergreen is one of the north's best-kept botanical secrets. In late summer its leaves turn autumnal shades of copper and pink.

Distribution

Mainly Scotland but can be found as far south as Derbyshire. There is also the rare site in Suffolk.

Habitat

Woods and moors.

Best time to see

Flowers from June to July.

Did you know...

Chickweed wintergreen is not a true wintergreen but, surprisingly, a relative of the primrose.
