2026 Senedd elections – Time to Take Action for Nature in Wales!

This is what Plantlife Cymru would like the new Senedd and Government to do.

In May 2026 there will be a new Senedd and Welsh Government. This Senedd term will run up to 2030 – a critical year. This is the deadline for Wales to meet global environmental targets such as ensuring that 30% of its land and water is managed for nature.

At this important moment for nature, Plantlife Cymru wants the new Senedd and Government to put nature at the heart of Welsh legislative programme and initiatives. To achieve this, we need to ensure the voice of wild plants and fungi is heard during the run up to the Senedd election.

Our Key Asks

We’re calling on the next Welsh Government to deliver legally binding targets for nature recovery by setting out a roadmap and providing enough funding.

The Environment Bill is expected to become law before the election. The new Government must implement it with urgency and ambition.

The Welsh Government should include the following in its roadmap for nature recovery:

  • Make living in Wales a joy once more by reversing the loss of nature – provide multi-year funding to restore wild plants, lichens and fungi
  • Enable farmers to thrive by producing food in a nature-friendly, sustainable way once more – support farmers to deliver for nature & climate with a long-term package of support via the Sustainable Farming Scheme
  • Ensure that ‘the green grass of home’ is crammed with a wide variety of species – boost meadow-making by farmers & communities via a funded Grassland Strategy
  • Ensure that our unique Welsh rainforests will still be there for our children – produce a joined-up well-funded Rainforest Strategy
  • Help ensure the UK’s spongy bogs do the job they’re good at – holding water – pass legislation to end sales of horticultural peat in Wales

What We Are Doing for the 2026 Senedd Election

We are working to persuade each political party to include Plantlife Cymru’s asks in their party manifesto. We are sending our briefing to all parties and offering to discuss this in a meeting. Keep an eye out on Plantlife Cymru Facebook and X channels for further information.

How You Can Help Nature in the 2026 Senedd Election

Please support our campaign by asking your constituency candidates to indicate their support for our asks. You can do this via email, letter, social media, or at a hustings event – whichever way works for you.
The final list of candidates will be published closer to the election. You can find out who the candidates are for your constituency here.

These asks sit alongside the broader Wales Environment Link manifesto.
