We’ve collated some common questions about cost you might have and

So, how much does it all cost?

Understandably, the cost of creating a meadow ultimately depends on the size, scale and seeding options.

Smaller meadows

Smaller areas, such as a garden, are relatively cheap to turn into wildflower meadows. The cost of seed to cover 50sqm ranges from about £20-£30. Before sowing, the ground can be prepared with normal garden tools, or more specialised equipment, like a garden scarifier, can be hired for the day for about £50. Ongoing management can often be done with garden tools.

Larger meadows

Larger green spaces such as community meadows, parks or village greens do require a more financial support. The price can range from £800-3,000 per hectare – including all aspects of making and managing a meadow (plant control, ground preparation and seeding).

Making it cheaper?

The prices above are rough guidelines, but there are ways to make your meadow-making journey cheaper:

  • Asking neighbours to share machinery or tools
  • Asking local meadow or conservation groups to donate seeds
  • Allowing meadows to develop naturally is much cheaper, but requires patience. By simply setting up appropriate annual management, you can create an attractive low-cost meadow in a few years.
  • For projects on public land, asking for help from volunteers, schools or colleges to help sow seed or prepare the ground.
